More about

The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut is a public art museum and research institute that houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. Presented to the university by Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929), the collection reflects the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period onward. The museum is closed for building conservation. While the YCBA is closed, access to the collections is by appointment only. The Center’s collections include more than 2,000 paintings, 250 sculptures, 20,000 drawings and watercolors, 40,000 prints, and 35,000 rare books and manuscripts. More than 40,000 volumes supporting research in British art and related fields are available in the Center’s Reference library. Works on view include masterpieces by Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Thomas Gainsborough, J. M. W. Turner, and John Constable, as well as major artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain. A note from Art UK: The Yale Center for British Art has joined Art UK, meaning the public can see the Center's artworks, starting with the oil paintings, for the purposes of enjoyment and research. The Center's holdings make up the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the UK and, as such, complement the UK's national art collection. While Yale Center for British Art is based in Connecticut, it has very strong links with the UK: its sister institution, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, has been based in central London since the 1970s. Art UK has no immediate plans to add any other international art collections.
