Prime Minister; became conservative MP, 1853; vigorous opponent of reforms under liberal governments; secretary for India under Disraeli, 1874–1878 and a staunch imperialist; both Prime Minister and foreign secretary in his three administrations, 1885–1886, 1886–1892, and 1895–1902, relinquishing the latter post in 1900 but continuing as premier.
