The National Trust for Scotland cares for one of the country’s greatest fine and decorative art collections, from great works of art to humble domestic items – nearly all of which are displayed in their original context. By 'original context' we mean the historic interiors of the castles and houses owned by the Trust, which might include original wooden panelling, decorative paint schemes on the walls or ceilings, as well as ornate plaster work. It is seeing collections on display in their authentic settings that makes a visit to a Trust house or castle such a unique experience, and brings you closer to the people who lived and worked there. Our goal is to give a voice to the people behind the great paintings and pot kettles, and it is their stories which we seek to communicate through the historic interiors.
