Modernism refers to broad movements in both philosophy and art which arose during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Modernism reflected a break from the past and search for new forms of expression, influenced by the newly emerging industrial world, urbanisation, and war.
Artists used new materials, techniques and visual tropes to address modern societies in their work.
