Carole Gibbons was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art (1957–1961), where her friendship with fellow student Alan Fletcher was an important influence. She first exhibited with Alan Fletcher and Douglas Abercrombie in 1958. Her first solo show, in 1965, was in her Renfrew Street studio, from which she sold paintings to poet J. F. Hendry. With the encouragement of Hendry, she was able to travel, and lived and worked in Spain. She returned to Glasgow in 1967.
