Sculptor, painter, designer and teacher, born and lived in Belfast, son of the monumental sculptor David MacCann. He was married to the artist Mercy Hunter, whom he met while studying from 1926–9 at Belfast School of Art. A scholarship took him to Royal College of Art, 1929–32. Among teaching appointments on his return was Belfast College of Art, 1938–9, prior to war service in Far East in Army. In 1942 he published short stories, Sparrows Round My Brow under the pen-name George Galway (Galway being his middle name). MacCann returned briefly to teaching, then was involved in commissioned work for the Festival of Britain, 1951, in Ulster and London. MacCann had a solo show at New Gallery, Belfast, 1965, and Queen’s University there gave him a memorial exhibition in 1968.
