Portrait of a little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, sitting in the street with a sandwich (piece) in her left hand and her right hand resting on a comic.

Joan Eardley, ARSA, RSA, studied at Goldsmiths and Glasgow School of Art and is known for her haunting images of Glasgow street children and tenements, which she started to draw and paint in the early 1950s from the streets surrounding her then home and studio. There is a companion painting, ‘Boy with comic’ (1957), which was purchased at the same time for Naomi Mitchison.

Eardley is also known for her powerful seascapes and landscapes which surrounded her home in Catterline.
