John Bonehill lectures in the history of art at the University of Glasgow. His research and teaching address various aspects of the art and culture of the long eighteenth century, with his publications including the exhibition catalogues William Hodges: The Art of Exploration (2004), Paul Sandby: Picturing Britain (2009), and most recently Old Ways New Roads: Travels in Scotland 1720–1830 (2021). He has also published essays on works by the painters Joseph Wright of Derby, Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg, and J. M. W. Turner among others. He is currently finishing a book entitled The Face of the Country: Estate Portraiture in Britain 1660–1832.
