Holcombe Ingleby was the second son of Clement Mansfield Ingleby and Sarah Oakes of Valentines, Ilford. Holcombe studied history at Oxford and pursued a brief career as a solicitor. In 1886, Holcombe Ingleby married Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe, sister of Eustace Neville-Rolfe, owner of Heacham Estate, Norfolk. Holcombe Ingleby purchased Heacham estate from his brother-in-law and in1904 moved to Sedgeford Hall (part of Heacham Estate) with his wife and their two children. When Sarah Ingleby died in 1906, Valentines was inherited by her son Holcombe who gave 12 acres of gardens to Ilford Council in memory of his mother. This, together with land sold by Sarah herself in 1899, formed the creation of a public park and became known as Valentines Park.
