Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) is a purpose-built museum storage facility and visitor centre in the south side of Glasgow. It houses much of Glasgow Museums’ Collection. It is unusual in offering the public access to the stores.
At any one time only a small fraction of Glasgow Museums’ objects can be on display so much of the Collection is kept at GMRC. The stores hold objects from the collections of fine and decorative art, natural history, human history, archaeology and technology and transport.
Regular tours include: Highlights of GMRC – an introduction to the venue and its many treasures; Art – including a glimpse of the vast holding of paintings and works on paper; Human History – a chance to see artefacts representing cultures from around the world; Transport and Technology – a closer look at objects in our exceptional transport and technology collections; Topical Tours – longer tours exploring a particular theme; Curatorial Tours – more in-depth looks at a particular object or collection; Behind-the-Scenes Tours – offering an insight into areas of museum work, such as conservation; BSL (British Sign Language) and Tours for the Visually Impaired, which are available on request.
