Painter, born in Hawick, Roxburghshire, who studied at Manchester Polytechnic, Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and Royal College of Art. He gained the NatWest Prize for Art and John Kinross Travelling Scholarship, both in 1993, and Alistair Gilchrist Fisher Memorial Awards, 1996. Group shows included Project Perec at French Institute, Edinburgh, 1993; Aberdeen Artists’ Society, Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1994; and Royal Over-Seas League Open, 1996. In 2000 Cranston showed work at the RSA inspired by a visit to Scandinavia, after he won an Alastair Salvesen Scholarship. Mappin Art Gallery gave him a solo exhibition in 2002.
