The whole of the foreground is raging sea, with, in the middle ground centre, a wrecked ship on its side. There is debris afloat all round it. On the right a flock of gulls hover over the waves. In the distance, in the top right corner, is a hill, on which stands the castle, with a flag flying. The weather is stormy, with black clouds over the left side of the picture.
