Abstract painter, born in Glasgow, where he studied at School of Art, 1952–6, in the latter year winning a RSA Carnegie Travelling Scholarship. In 1957 Abercrombie travelled with the Bertram Mills Circus, then for five years from 1958 was a painter-designer with Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre. In 1964 Abercrombie moved to London where he worked at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. After living and painting in Barcelona and Minorca for a couple of years from 1965 the artist returned to settle in London. He participated in many group shows and was included in British Painting 1952–1977 at RA in the latter year. His first one-man show was at 57 Gallery in Edinburgh in 1958, others including Citizens Theatre in 1961, Thames Gallery in Windsor in 1963, the Steuer Gallery in Lippstadt, Germany, in 1969 and a studio show at Bombay Wharf, in London, in 1977.
